Banyan By The Ganges

Located on the banks of the river Ganga in PauriGarhwal of Uttarakhand, Banyan by the Ganges is a unique destination that promises incredible experiences for nature lovers, anglers, rafters, bird watchers and yoga enthusiasts. The retreat lends itself, on its own, to an amazingly relaxing time by the riverside, away from the din and bustle of city life. Lazy days spent reading on a hammock, an occasional hand at angling on the river or a few hours of pure adrenaline rush on white water rapids, all the ingredients for the perfect getaway are at hand. The retreat is a paradise for bird watchers with a large variety of Himalayan and migratory birds commonly visible. The resort, spread over three acres, is in Beas Ghatt, PauriGarhwal, Uttarakhand, close to Devprayag right by the river Ganges. BBTG has 12 well appointed luxury swiss cottages and a spacious 40-seater dining room, The Riverstone Diner.

Accommodation

Banyan by the Ganges has 12 well appointed luxury Swiss cottages. Each cottage is approximately 300 sq.ft. in size with a spacious balcony and a large attached toilet with running hot and cold water. Large king size beds encased in luxury linen with mattresses you could sink into providing for a relaxing good night’s sleep.

Dining

The focal point of the Resort is the 40 ft X 30 ft dining room. It has been built exclusively by local stones and is aptly called the Riverstone Diner. The Diner was meticulously conceptualised and built with the now hard to find art of Stone masonry which is unfortunately a dying art. We had to look beyond simply building with brick and mortar as we wanted to imbibe the essence of the mountains and the river around us. Finding artisans who could build with the traditional art was a task in itself. After searching long and hard we were able to find some old and experienced artisans who were excited to be a part of the project. These stone masons would often lapse into nostalgia as the Diner slowly took shape. What has emerged is a dining area which lends itself beautifully to the surroundings.

Experience at Banyan By The Ganges

White Water Rafting

The Ganga is one of India’s major and holiest of rivers. With a location close to Delhi, it is a popular choice for first-timers, non-swimmers and families. It is also the hub of white-water rafting in India. It combines an action-packed trip with the best rapids, float sections and wilderness. A perfect introduction to white-water rafting and an ideal weekend getaway to calm overworked nerves. The river Ganga has been host to many great white water paddlers from all over the world and it has not been without reason. The upper valley tributaries of the Ganga, the Alaknanda and the Bhagirathi are reasonable expedition level rivers.

Rafting Stretches around Banyan by the Ganges

Devprayag – Beas Ghat – A Family rafting adventure Welcome to the Ganga. We start our rafting trip below the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi at Devprayag and now are on the Ganga. Float through beautiful gorges, soak in the sun, bodysurf and bird-watch. It is a mild section from here to Beas Ghat and a great introduction to white water rafting for first timers and Non swimmers as well as kids. Raft time is approximately 1.5 Hrs to Beas Ghat.

Bhagwan – Beas Ghat It’s a 28 KM beautiful stretch away from the crowd and a good class III+ section. We have to drive to Bhagwan after crossing Devprayag on the Badrinath road and 15KM short of Srinagar; We start the trip on the Alaknanda as it enters the last canyon stretch with good white water, with names of rapids such as “Bhagwan’s pillow”, “The Deadly Duos” and more. We raft down to Beas Ghat crossing the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi River at Devprayag. Picnic lunch at Devprayag and we continue to raft down to Beas Ghat and put out from the river at the resort. Listen to your guide carefully it will come in handy during the day.

Koteshwar Dam – Devprayag/Beas Ghat – Classy white water, long float stretches, beautiful gorge and a confluence. We start early and drive 35km from our Resort to Koteshwar Dam – the put-in point. The drive takes around 1.5 hrs. After a comprehensive safety briefing & loading of the raft, we begin rafting from the dam site. The water levels are controlled by the dam and water is released daily at a particular time. At low water Bhagirathi is a technical river requiring a lot of swift moves on the raft. The Guide has a tough time giving commands while the paddlers have the same following them since everything has to happen so quickly. But when the water level is high it offers some amazing white water. The major grade 4 rapids along this section are ‘Elephant Rock’, ‘Shoot’ and ‘Confluence’. We assure you that at least one of these rapids will leave you shaken. We have had some amazing adventures on these rapids. All of them require a scout before running.

In House Games

For the sports freak, there’s enough to keep the energies charged. Take your pick from Volleyball, Badminton, Carom, and Chess. Or perhaps, simply sitting and let your thoughts drift with the sound of flowing river. Needless to mention that Beach Volley just about gets crowned as the king of all camp games available.

Evenings at the Resort

Loosen up in the evening with the hip swinging ‘n’ singing session, complete with bonfire. Or participate in one of the campfire games. And if there’s a musician in any of you, there’s always the option of carrying your instrument and creating your own ambience. Then there is always getting involved in Levitation, Knots and Boston Lap games to name a few of the campfire games.
